Design & Layout
The dwelling is imbedded into the sloping site to allow the church to maintain its autonomy as the prominent building on the street. The house is entered via the single storey volume which incorporates a garage, storage, and guest accommodation. The larger two-storey volume sits further south on the site and comprises the main living spaces on the ground floor, a double-height library/study and the master suite on the first floor.
Carefully considered fenestration manipulates light and views so that the experience of moving through the building relates to the immediate site and wider views to Avondale Castle in the west. This culminates in a covered external space on the first floor, which overlooks the Kype Hills to the south.
The building’s massing creates a private external court to the south, sensitively landscaped as part of a wider set of proposals for the site which extends westwards towards the Powmillon Burn.
