Half of Eleven
Isle of Skye
Low-lying and modest in scale, this 4-bedroom family home is designed to appear unobtrusive within the crofting township of Breakish in south Skye. Vertical untreated larch cladding allows the building to blend naturally with its surroundings, in a relatively exposed setting. Hit and miss screening to the front allows shelter for recessed windows and external circulation.
The principle living space is glazed on two sides - taking advantage of the views up the Inner Sound to the front, and opening out to a sunny sheltered space to the rear. Internally, exposed timber beams provide a textured ceiling space giving extra height, concealing llighting and exposing the main structure. The open living areas are separated by oak-ply dressers and a kitchen island, all set on a polished screed which runs throughout.
The house won an RIAS Award in 2023 and the Scottish Forestry/Wood For Good Best Use of Timber Award 2023.
