Creag na h-Iolaire

Sheildaig, Wester Ross

The structure is perched on a steeply sloping site above Loch Shieldaig, in one of the most spectacular settings that we have worked in.

A previous owner had brutally cleared the site and access in the native woodland. Our goal was to repair the surrounding landscape and to carefully position a building that took full advantage of the panorama across the loch to the Torridon hills.

The rear edge of the building sits on the land enclosing a small entrance courtyard between it and the exposed rockface. Supported by a row of inset steel columns, the building appears to hover in the tree canopy. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and a three-metre-high ceiling provide an unrestricted outlook from the living spaces. An inset terrace provides fresh air in the centre of the plan, and a glazed corner provides a dramatic and exposed experience in the principal bedroom. Clad in larch, the building should mature gracefully on the wooded hillside.
