The Cowshed Bunkhouse
Isle of Skye
A hostel in north Skye has been transformed by Dualchas into a “boutique accommodation”. Uig Hostel, which was formerly used as a maternity hospital, was in dire need of upgrade. The building was completely renovated and reopened within seven months of the initial appointment.
The new owners required a quick design service and construction so that work could be carried out over the close-season and be open for the end of June. Renamed the Cowshed, the hostel now offers high-quality kitchen, living and bedroom accommodation, with new shower rooms adding to the luxury. Bespoke bunk beds were designed by Dualchas, and large areas of glazing have been installed to make the most of the views.
Externally the building has been over-clad in ebony-stained larch and open deck areas created so that customers can enjoy the evening sun and watch out for the Western Isles ferries. A concrete slab which formerly supported a gas cylinder now acts as the elevated plinth for a large iron bull – a strong statement of the Cowshed’s ambitions.
